Why the table stops at position 10

There is no sufficiently consistent position-by-position tail in this selected source set to publish a defensible benchmark beyond the first page. Extending the curve would create false precision exactly where the data is weakest.

A query averaging position 14 is generally not waiting for a cleverer title to unlock its traffic. It first needs a stronger ranking through a better answer, closer intent alignment, internal support, or appropriate authority work. Improve the snippet after the result becomes meaningfully visible.

Why CTR changes at the same position

AI Overviews and answer features

A position number does not reveal how much material appears above the result. AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, and similar features can satisfy the search or delay the first traditional organic listing.

Mobile and desktop

Device mix changes what users see, but the direction is not universal across published datasets. Do not automatically increase or reduce the benchmark because a site is mobile-heavy.

Instead, run separate mobile and desktop views. If the gap is concentrated on one device, inspect that device's SERP and snippet before editing the page for everyone.

Branded and non-branded queries

Step 1: Build page-query rows, not page-only averages

Trap 1: A page's average position combines unrelated searches.

Suppose one URL appears at position 2 for one query and position 40 for another. A page-level report can show an average near 21 even though the page never occupied that position for either query. Comparing its blended CTR with a position-21 benchmark would have no useful meaning.

A page-query row keeps the clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position attached to the same search term and URL. Position is still an average across impressions, so volatile rows may need a shorter date range or further segmentation by country and device.

Step 2: Use finalized dates

Use a 28-day or 90-day period long enough to reduce daily noise. For a conservative repeatable audit, end the period three days before the day you run it.

That three-day buffer is a working rule, not a claim that Search Console always takes three days to report. Current documentation says the newest information can be preliminary, while the standard report defaults to complete days unless recent partial data is deliberately selected. Trap 2: Comparing incomplete recent data with a complete earlier period.

This can make clicks and CTR appear to fall simply because the newest period is not final. Use equivalent complete windows on both sides of a comparison.

Step 3: Exclude brand and low-impression rows

Apply the non-branded query filter when it is available. Otherwise, use a query filter or regular expression covering the company name, domain, product names, common misspellings, and distinctive branded terms.

Next, remove rows with fewer than about 30 impressions. This is a triage threshold rather than a law of statistics, but it stops tiny samples from dominating the list.

Trap 3: Sorting by the worst CTR without an impression floor.

Five impressions and no clicks produces a 0% CTR, but it does not establish a repeatable problem. Without a floor, the audit fills with queries that have almost no opportunity attached to them.

Step 4: Match each row to a position floor

Round the page-query row's average position to the nearest whole position and look up the corresponding floor in the benchmark table.

Use this only as a first-pass bucket. If a row sits near a boundary or its ranking changed substantially during the period, inspect position over time or rerun the analysis over a more stable window.

Rows beyond position 10 should leave the CTR-remediation list and enter the ranking-improvement list.

Step 5: Calculate missed clicks, not percentage-point gaps

  • Actual CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100
  • Expected clicks at the floor = impressions × floor CTR
  • Estimated missed clicks = expected clicks − actual clicks, with negative results treated as zero

For example, a page-query pair ranking third with 1,000 impressions and 40 clicks has a 4.0% CTR. The selected position-3 floor is 10.1%, which represents 101 clicks from those impressions. The estimated gap is therefore 61 clicks.

The calculation does not promise that a rewrite will recover all 61. It sizes the opportunity so a 61-click candidate can be reviewed before a five-click candidate.

Step 6: Prioritize the rows with the largest opportunity

Sort by estimated missed clicks, then manually review the SERP, query intent, current title, description, and page content for the highest-value rows. A large calculated gap is a review priority, not an automatic rewrite instruction.

What to fix when CTR is genuinely low

First, confirm that the page actually delivers what the query asks for. If it does not, revisit the page's targeting and the underlying keyword research process before echoing the query in a new title.

A title that promises content the page does not contain may win a click and immediately disappoint the visitor. Fix the page or choose a better-matched target instead of disguising an intent problem as a snippet problem.

When the page is a good answer and the ranking is already competitive:

  1. Rewrite the title in the searcher's language while stating the page's real value clearly.
  2. Use roughly 50–60 characters as a practical title-editing guardrail, not a guaranteed display limit.
  3. Write a specific description of roughly 140–155 characters, knowing that Google may select different page text for some searches.
