We connect brands to their customers, create high-performing, growth-driven websites, and help attract and engage their audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not one for big mission statements, but I\u2019m a firm believer that if you\u2019re investing in your brand or digital presence, then you should be making a return on that investment. We help our clients avoid pouring money down the drain, and invest in the areas that are going to matter most to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-your-backstory-and-how-did-you-come-up-with-the-idea\">What&#8217;s your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I always wanted to run an agency. It just appealed to me from being young. Traveling, seeing clients all over the world, awesome office spaces, working with great brands and people from every corner of the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What wasn\u2019t to like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea isn\u2019t anything new. Agencies have existed for years. But we wanted to attack it from a new angle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started Canny Creative straight out of University. Common industry knowledge (or just common sense really) dictates that you can\u2019t just go launching an agency without any experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve never been one for doing things the traditional way. And I knew I could. And, I knew by doing it without any preconceived notions of how agencies should and shouldn\u2019t function, I could be guided by our clients, and design our approach around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that\u2019s exactly what I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-since-launch-what-has-worked-to-attract-more-organic-traffic\">Since launch, what has worked to attract more organic traffic?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve spent absolutely nothing on marketing, except time. In business, I love nothing more than attracting a new lead, having a great conversation, and turning that prospect into a client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our blog first and foremost has been our main route to market. And, when we have new sales conversations or meet new people, they\u2019ve always seen it! They reference things that we vlog about or talk about in our latest episode &#8211; so that\u2019s always great to hear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally, forall new leads are great, they\u2019re a much harder sell than working with existing clients, who already know, like, and trust you. The blog is our biggest growth channel, but it took me 3 years to finally hire someone to manage that full time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And since doing that, we\u2019ve grown more and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I\u2019d had done that a few years sooner, we\u2019d have accelerated growth quicker (especially given we were in \u201cThe Golden Age\u201d of blogging!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, since bringing that resource in, it\u2019s been a godsend! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now we have 2 full-time writers working to create our content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a good bit of luck in that our blog, early days, attracted a client in Japan. We were invited out there and worked on a super exciting skincare project out there. That was big news for a tiny little agency (still working from a bedroom in Newcastle!)<br><br>But making big bold decisions, to go out to Japan and work out there, to embrace that these things can happen &#8211; has helped get us to where we are now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes I think we\u2019re stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were invited out to London, Belfast, the USA, Canada &#8211; all to talk about doing some work together. Where most others would \u201cZoom\u201d in, we flew out. Then we won the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It probably makes no sense from a fiscal standpoint, but hey, I\u2019m not one to complain when we\u2019re getting results!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-seo-tools-do-you-use-for-your-business\">What SEO tools do you use for your business? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t actually use many SEO tools outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\">AHREFs<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For us, AHREF\u2019S is the fountain of all knowledge, and it\u2019s pretty much all we use. I didn\u2019t think we\u2019re any good at link building, but that screenshot says otherwise!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t do anything specific, to build links. We just create content and judging by this, people are finding it super valuable. One thing that we maybe do that helps, is create custom graphics for our posts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They then get used and linked to, or earn us a link back &#8211; I\u2019ve seen that happen a few times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, as we\u2019re still a small team, we have the content creation down, but the distribution and marketing of our own content is a bit of a sore spot! We really need to be doing more of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the only type of active link building we\u2019re doing is when we get asked to write a post elsewhere. Outside of that, we do nothing at all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know \u2013 that\u2019s super lazy, but it\u2019s a case of the cobbler\u2019s shoes. I probably manage 2 books a year at the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> But, I absolutely LOVE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B013M5FWX4\/ref=dp-kindle-redirect\">\u201cContent Machine\u201d by Dan Norris<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s singlehandedly the only book I\u2019ve read and thought \u201c<em>My God, it\u2019s like I\u2019ve written a book. I\u2019m peering into my own soul.<\/em>\u201d Everything he shares in that book is exactly how we view content marketing and SEO at Canny. I ask all of our new marketers to read it too. I\u2019ve read it 3 or 4 times, just can\u2019t get enough of it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of books, I watch a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garyvaynerchuk.com\/\">GaryVee online<\/a>. I just like his raw energy and unfiltered approach to life and business. Although, I prefer his tactical stuff to his motivational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And recently, I\u2019ve been enjoying <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/how-to-win\/id1575516851\">\u201cHow to Win\u201d &#8211; a podcast by Peep Laja<\/a> (of CXL fame) on my drive\u2019s into work. I just wish there was a daily episode rather than a weekly one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-the-next-step-in-your-seo-journey\">What\u2019s the next step in your SEO Journey?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We really do need to see the marketing side of our \u201ccontent marketing\u201d improve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a huge thing for the back end of 2021 and into 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re also going to double down on auditing our content and making sure we\u2019re only serving up the stuff that\u2019s bringing real value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Webinars have been on our radar for a while, so I\u2019d presume we\u2019re going to jump into that at some point. And our email funnels and automation need work too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s really a never-ending process haha. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We get to the end of one thing and then jump straight into the next. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time it\u2019s done, we have to start all over again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We actually keep a list called \u201cThe Big Unlimited Budget Wishlist\u201d &#8211;
