I\u2019m a founder of Content Snare, a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/contentsnare.com\/client-portal\/\">client portal<\/a> that helps businesses collect content and documents from clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SEO and content marketing has always been my favourite marketing channel. My first foray into online business in 2009 was building websites, ranking them in search and making an income from ads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have since built 3 software products (<a href=\"https:\/\/chimprewriter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chimp Rewriter<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/akturatech.com\/project\/silver-siphon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Silver Siphon<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/contentsnare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Content Snare<\/a>), and SEO has been the main channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s such a high \u201cbang for your buck\u201d marketing channel. SEO continues to drive traffic long after you\u2019ve done the work, as long as you continue to build up your domain and pay attention to the right things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-a-real-business\">Building a real business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you probably know, SEO isn\u2019t for people who want results quickly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our SEO journey has probably been even slower than usual. We\u2019re building a business for the long term, not just trying to rank at all costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image border-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-google-search-console-1024x429.png\" alt=\"Last 12 Months search volume of Contentsnare (Google Search Console)\" class=\"wp-image-1993\" width=\"768\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-google-search-console-1024x429.png 1024w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-google-search-console-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-google-search-console-768x322.png 768w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-google-search-console-1536x644.png 1536w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-google-search-console.png 1670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Very little of what we do is scalable, and that\u2019s fine. Over time, it\u2019s building a domain and website that makes it fairly easy to rank for new terms, because Google likes it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-out-of-the-box-keyword-research\">Out of the box keyword research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re in a software category that people don\u2019t really search for. It\u2019s not like a proposal tool, where you know loads of people are searching for \u201cproposal software\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of our use-cases have little volume. For example, very few people are searching for &#8220;<em>get website content from clients.<\/em>&#8221; So we\u2019ve had to look far and wide to find keywords that are worth ranking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even then, most of our traffic comes from the most random, longtail things that people type into Google &#8211; they don\u2019t even show up in typical keyword tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image border-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-domain-authority-1024x186.jpg\" alt=\"Domain Rating of the domain contentsnare.com (Ahrefs)\" class=\"wp-image-1969\" width=\"746\" height=\"136\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-domain-authority-1024x186.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-domain-authority-300x55.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-domain-authority-768x140.jpg 768w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-domain-authority-1536x280.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-domain-authority.jpg 1824w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that you\u2019re here, I assume you know a little about <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/beginners-guide-to-seo\/keyword-research\">keyword research<\/a> already, so I\u2019ll just briefly go over what has worked for us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-researching-other-sites\">Researching other sites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We created a list of just about every tool, blog, website or community we could find that shared our target audience. I don\u2019t mean competitors &#8211; I mean sites where their audience are potential customers of yours. So if your target audience are YouTubers, there are plenty of sites out there aimed at helping YouTubers grow their channel etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we ran every single site through <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\">Ahrefs<\/a> to find all their top keywords. Those keyword lists were scoured to find anything that aligned with what we do, so we could write a blog post about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video autoplay loop src=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Untitled-Project-1.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Truth be told the effort that went into this didn\u2019t turn up as much as we hoped.  But it does get you thinking in different ways that can help you come up with new ideas. <br><br>When you see what content others are writing about, it jogs ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it didn\u2019t generate a lot of keywords for us, I think this is an amazing first step for many other businesses. It helps you learn about the audience as well as generate keyword lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-asking-your-audience\">Asking your audience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When people sign up for our product, they get a 14-day trial. We offer to extend it to 21 days if they tell us how they heard about us. If they choose \u201c<em>Google<\/em>\u201d, we ask what they typed into search.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image border-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/extended-trial-offer-1024x492.png\" alt=\"Extended trial offer on contentsnare.com\" class=\"wp-image-1992\" width=\"512\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/extended-trial-offer-1024x492.png 1024w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/extended-trial-offer-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/extended-trial-offer-768x369.png 768w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/extended-trial-offer.png 1485w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We also regularly talk to our audience on Zoom, and send surveys with open-ended questions, asking them what they use our product for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of these have been a goldmine for the <em>actual <\/em>words people use to find our product &#8211; including many we had not thought of. You\u2019d be surprised how many different ways there are of saying the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brainstorms\">Brainstorms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We also spent some time just listing out tons and tons of things that our audience might be interested in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found it best to think about an entire process for something. So with that YouTube example again, start from the very beginning of what someone does on their YouTube journey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>They want to start a channel. They might search \u201c<em>how to start a channel<\/em>\u201d<\/li><li>The need to record a video. Maybe they\u2019ll search for \u201c<em>camera gear for recording videos<\/em>\u201d<\/li><li>The need to edit the video. They could search for \u201c<em>editing videos for YouTube<\/em>\u201d<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>And so on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking through every step of a process can spit out a huge list of ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you push every single one of them through a keyword tool to see if it comes up with any related ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-content-for-those-keywords\">Creating content for those keywords<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t done anything extraordinary here, other than just writing good content, <a href=\"https:\/\/contentcreatorsplanner.com\/how-to-be-a-more-consistent-content-creator\/\">consistently<\/a>. You don\u2019t need yet another guide on writing content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this was the process for getting to where we are today with content production:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Phase 1: I wrote &amp; edited everything myself. Probably for at least 2 years. This isn\u2019t difficult if you choose topics that you know a lot about.<\/li><li>Phase 2: We hired freelance writers for some content that needed research, or just to take some of the load away from me.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Phase 3: We hired an internal writer<\/li><li>Phase 4 (now): We have an internal writer, use freelancers occasionally and I write some as well.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve also done video content where it makes sense. For some keywords you might end up with both your post and video ranking on page 1, taking up a lot of real estate on that page.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-better-link-building\">Better link building<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, any <a href=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/seo-campaign\/\">SEO campaign<\/a> isn\u2019t complete without getting some links to your content.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image border-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-referring-domains-1024x389.jpg\" alt=\"Referring Domains count of contentsnare.com\" class=\"wp-image-1978\" width=\"768\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-referring-domains-1024x389.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-referring-domains-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-referring-domains-768x292.jpg 768w, https:\/\/seobuddy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/contentsnare-referring-domains.jpg 1441w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, this is the least scalable part of this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned earlier, we are just building a long term business, and doing things that help us build a real, authoritative domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-relationships\">Creating relationships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For a long time it has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/contentsnare.com\/get-more-referrals\/\">part of my weekly routine<\/a> to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Keep in contact with people in my network<\/li><li>Add new people to that network<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Relationships are <em>everything<\/em> in our business. They are how we were able to initially launch our product, how we\u2019ve built most of our links, and how I was able to pre-sell my <a href=\"https:\/\/jimmyrose.me\/zapier-mastery\/\">Zapier course<\/a> without even having an audience for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have also resulted in some of our best links from some insanely high authority sites &#8211; ones that prompted an SEO consultant to say to me \u201cHow the F did you get a link from them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get a guest post on someone\u2019s site, get mentioned in their posts, or go on their podcast if you know them personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My relationships are built by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Meeting people at conferences and events (by far the best way)<\/li><li>Getting involved in Facebook groups and communities and helping people<\/li><li>Asking people to come on <a href=\"https:\/\/agencyhighway.com\">my podcast<\/a> &#8211; leading with value by putting them in front of our audience<\/li><li>Asking for introductions from people I know<\/li><li>Sometimes buying gifts for people &#8211; when it makes sense. This is hard to do well &#8211; I learned a lot from reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Giftology-Increase-Referrals-Strengthen-Retention-ebook\/dp\/B01FT16BPM\">Giftology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/casabona.org\/gift-guides\/\">gift guides<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-go-on-podcasts\">Go on podcasts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is probably my favourite link building method. It:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Only takes maybe an hour of your time<\/li><li>Creates &amp; builds relationships, feeding back into the section above<\/li><li>Puts you in front of a new audience<\/li><li>Gets links from great websites, which are often syndicated in so many places<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I interviewed an SEO guy once who said \u201cpretty much all I do these days for SEO is go on podcasts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s pretty powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ampmycontent.com\/podcast-guest\/\">Getting on podcasts<\/a> is fairly simple if you\u2019re already doing part 1 &#8211; building relationships.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have built a name for yourself in communities like Facebook or Twitter by helping others, then it\u2019s easier to get on podcasts. If the host recognises your name because you helped them with something or they\u2019ve seen your name pop up before, they\u2019ll be way more likely to accept your podcast pitch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On that note &#8211; do the pitching yourself. I host a podcast myself and basically every outsourced pitch I get sucks and is immediately deleted. When I receive a message from the founder of a business who has clearly done their research, they are almost always accepted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-good-guest-posts\">Good guest posts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t do a lot of this, so we make them count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not just pitching anyone to write for them. Instead I write guest posts for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Friends who are building awesome businesses<\/li><li>Software companies that I\u2019m a partner with<\/li><li>Great sites that I think are worth writing for (hello SEO Buddy!)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And guess what\u2026 many of these opportunities come from building relationships.
